4 tips for spring cleaning your carpet...

It’s that time of year again, the sunshine is peeping through the windows and you may be feeling the need to have a big spring clean; don't forget your carpets!

Especially over the past few years, we have all been in our homes more than ever before. Your carpets may well have seen a few more muddy pawprints or drink spillages than usual. Don't panic, we have some tips to help bring back your carpeted floors to their former glory.

First of all, get that hoover out and take your time to cover all areas, including your edges! Once you’re happy there are no crumbs or bits of fluff on the carpet, it’s time to take the next step – stain removal.

If you have a ‘bleach cleanable’ carpet you will need a clean white cloth, household bleach, warm water and kitchen towel to hand. In a perfect world, you would have tackled spillages immediately but don't panic if not. These steps should help in restoring your carpets! Make a bleach solution, using one-part bleach and ten parts water. Remember to take care when working with bleach, best to wait until the little ones are out of the way. Using your white cloth and working gently from the outside in, gently blot away the stain, adding more bleach to the solution if you feel is necessary. When the stain has been removed, carefully blot the carpet dry with kitchen towel. It’s always a good idea to test this in a small inconspicuous area first, just in case!

If you have a wool carpet, you can’t use bleach as it will take the dye out of the wool and discolour it. You will need a dry kitchen towel, a clean white cloth, warm water and perhaps some washing powder. Ideally you would have treated any spillages immediately as discussed above. Unfortunately, if these stains have been left for some time it may be harder to lift the stain out by yourself. Likewise with food spillages remove as much as possible to avoid scrubbing stains into the carpet fibres.

Using a little warm water and a kitchen towel, gently blot the stain, working from the outside in to minimise spreading. Continue this, replacing the towel when necessary, until the stain has faded significantly. One word of warning here, take care not to over-wet the carpet! Finally, use a clean, white cloth and a little warm water and continue to blot the stain until disappeared.

If your stain is still visible after these steps, feel free to get in touch and we’ll help you if we can!
