Sisal is made from natural fibres, specially taken from the agave plant’s long and spiny leaves, yet the natural element of sisal does not minimise your choices. The fibres in a sisal carpet are woven in various patterns to create a focal point in your room. The most popular styles are often the timeless tight weave of a herringbone or basketweave, both a finer style of sisal, as well as a boucle and tigers eye design which offer a chunkier texture.
Natural carpets are both versatile and extremely hard wearing, making them ideal for heavy traffic areas in homes such as living rooms, halls and as a stair carpet. They are also ideal for reception areas, hallways and stairs in commercial properties. Most sisal carpets are given a ‘heavy domestic’ rating, meaning they are suitable for all areas. However, sisal carpets are not suitable for wet areas like bathrooms & kitchens. The fibres in a sisal carpet are incredibly absorbent and once wet, sisal does not recover very well. It is also worth noting that a sisal is far coarser underfoot than a typical wool or manmade carpet, but this helps with the durability and performance of the flooring.
A sisal carpet is latex backed. This supports the weave when transporting the sisal as it is such a flexible product. To fit a sisal correctly, it must be done using a ‘double stick installation’. Because of the way in which the natural fibres are woven, a sisal carpet cannot be ‘stretch fit’ or it will become baggy over time and a potential trip hazard, as well as looking terrible. A double stick installation involves tackifying the underlay to the prepared subfloor and then permanently sticking the carpet to the underlay.
Natural sisal carpets are available in a range of classic neutral tones. You can work through from a light cream all the way to a dark brown and black in some ranges to match your décor beautifully.
